Hang Mioku’s last act in her 20-year addiction to plastic surgery made her infamous: She picked up a syringe, filled it with cooking oil and injected into her own face.

Hang Mioku, 48, had her first cosmetic procedure at 28 and has since been addicted. Her face has become swollen after numerous injections of cooking oil that required even more sugery to reconstruct her face.

This is one of the most common questions Dr. Weinrach is asked by women who are interested in a breast augmentation, breast lift also known as mastopexy, or a combination of both. The answer is that one is not “better” than the other; there are advantages and disadvantages to both. It is not really completely possible to determine which is the absolute best choice for a particular patient without a physical exam to determine breast tissue quality; however, in a nutshell, it comes down to this:

The advantage of Silicone Gel breast implants is that they feel more like a natural breast. However, they are much more expensive than saline breast implants, and, since they are pre-filled, a larger incision is needed to place them, resulting in a larger scar than if a saline breast implant is used. Also, adjustments to size cannot be made during surgery.

Saline breast implants are just the opposite. The are less expensive than silicone gel breast implants. Saline breast implants are placed prior to filling them so a much smaller incision is needed, resulting in a smaller scar. Also, adjustments to the size of the implant can be made during surgery and even after surgery in some cases. Saline breast implants tend to not feel quite as natural as silicone gel implants. However, in a patient with plenty of good quality breast tissue to begin with to cover the implant, a quite natural result can be achieved. On the contrary, if a saline implant is placed in an area of involuted (”deflated”) breast tissue and thin, poorly elastic skin, a much less natural breast will likely result. So, a good preoperative physical exam to determine tissue quality is critical. This is best accomplished by a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

“Pink Star” restaurant donation program raised breast cancer awareness and funds.

Through its “Pink Star” fundraising campaign for breast cancer awareness Carl’s Jr. and Hardee restaurants have raised over $900,000 to fight breast cancer. During the three-week, in-store fundraiser in May, guests at Carl’s Jr.® and Hardee’s® restaurants across the United States donated to the campaign, in support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).

For each $1 donation, restaurant guests received a commemorative pink Happy Star cutout to personalize and place on a restaurant lobby display.

The check for $900,000 was presented to Janelle Hail, CEO of the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to help the NBCF’s ongoing program to offer free mammogram and treatment programs at hospitals and clinics in 25 states.

“The outpouring of support and the generosity of our guests is quite simply breathtaking and very humbling indeed,” said Andrew Puzder, president and CEO for CKE Restaurants. “We are also extremely proud of all of our restaurants, both company and franchise, whose enthusiasm allow us to grow this program with each passing year. Every pink Happy Star that stood proudly on our walls showed one person’s pledge and our company’s commitment to supporting worthy organizations and causes, like those championed by the NBCF.”

The “Pink Star” program was initiated in 2005 by the Carl’s Jr. franchise body, the Star Franchise Association and raised $175,000. Within three years, the total amount raised has increased more than five-fold to $900,000. This year’s donation was made possible by generous guests at more than 3,200 Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s franchise- and company-operated restaurants across the country.
